Melvin Bouva, discussed bilateral relations with his Dutch counterpart, David van Weel. During this meeting Suriname specifically asked that certain matters be addressed. Minister Bouva reportedly asked for access to sensitive files. He emphasized that the collaboration between Suriname and the Netherlands is already taking shape but that it must be intensified further. Education, tourism, agriculture and the Makandra program were discussed. Minister Bouva explained that Suriname would like the Makandra program which is aimed at strengthening capacity and institutional building be resumed and expanded. Both officials also discussed the shared slavery history. Minister Bouva explicitly asked for access to closed archives while also discussing the visa policy, matters regarding protocol and the €19 million that was seized in the Netherlands. He pointed out that these topics require priority within the bilateral relations. Both officials also discussed international files including the ones on the regional safety and the situation in Haiti. Suriname highlighted its future role as chair of the Council for Foreign Ministers and incoming chair of the Caricom. Minister Bouva asked for a closer collaboration with the Netherlands so that Suriname could tap into financing funds of the European Union to focus on sustainable development and climate issues. He applauded the presence of Van Weel during the state visit and labeled it an important moment for further strengthening relations.
