PARAMARIBO - Justice and Police (JusPol) Minister Harish Monorath recently expressed disbelief when he heard that the Surinamese Police Association (SPB) is thinking about...

boycotting the annual parade on Independence Day, November 25th, due to dissatisfaction regarding the communications about promotions. He made it clear that the police officials never notified him about the issue. After having contacted both parties, the minister concluded that there is no conflict whatsoever. The questions regarding the policy on promotions were discussed and answered during these talks. Minister Monorath made it clear that there is no secrecy surrounding the list of people who will be promoted to a higher rank. “Everybody can know who will be promoted. We will not promote people at random. I am not in favor of handing out special promotions based on political preference,” said Minister Monorath who added that he is in favor of transparency which is why he shared the list with the names of people who are up for a promotion with the union. “It turns out that the union wanted to see the list. I have invited them so that we could discuss it,” said Minister Monorath.
