Minister Monorath under pressure over disappearance of mercury

PARAMARIBO - Justice and Police (Juspol) minister Harish Monorath faced criticism in parliament over the disappearance of eleven cylinders of mercury from a shipping container that is located on the premises of the Geyersvlijt Police Station.

Times of Suriname

MP Mahinder Jogi (VHP) and MP Rabin Parmessar (NDP) have demanded answers especially given the fact that the mercury disappeared from a location that is supposed to be heavily guarded. MP Jogi finds it odd that a huge amount of mercury vanished without a trace from a police station. He called the disappearance alarming. “It raises many questions”, said MP Jogi who added that an investigation must be carried out to find out how unauthorized people gained access to the shipping container where the mercury had been stored. MP Rabin Parmessar made it clear that he was not satisfied with the explanation that was given by minister Monorath.

He pointed out that “parliament has received very little information about the theft”. “Unfortunately I am not content with the statement that was given by the minister of Juspol”, said MP Parmessar who added that a thorough investigation must be carried out. MP Parmessar wants to know who was in charge of storing the mercury, how the shipping container was guarded and where the mercury has ended up. “This is not a matter that must be taken lightly”, said MP Parmessar. MP Parmessar explained that “this was not the first time that goods disappeared from police buildings and storage facilities of the police”. He made it clear that people start losing their faith in the police because of such incidents. “The Ministry of Justice and Police must answer the questions as soon as possible.”
