PARAMARIBO - The Ministry of Home Affairs will not organize its annual end-of-the-year party this year.

Home Affairs Minister Marinus Bee reached this decision in response to a wave of criticism from citizens. He explained that he decided to cancel the traditional event after careful and serious consideration. “It is important to listen to the nation,” said Minister Bee. The money that had been put aside for the end-of-the-year party will be used for something else. Reports indicate that each ministry received permission to spend SRD 500,000 on the end-of-the-year party. Other ministries, the Office of the President, the Office of the Vice President and the National Assembly have also decided to opt for the austerity measure. Minister Bee thanked the nation for its contribution to determining the policy. “The government must be willing to listen and to change its course when that becomes necessary.”
