the Marowijne River must be given priority by the Ministry of Finance and Planning,” said MP Geneviévre Jordan (ABOP). The MP urged Finance Minister Adelien Wijnerman to swiftly process the documents that are sent by the Ministry of Natural Resources. “The people from thosenvillages have been without clean potable water for far too long,” said MP Jordan who reminded the government that there is a huge demand for water especially given the fact that “we are currently in the dry season.” “The government can not postpone the measures aimed at delivering water to these villages any longer,” said MP Jordan who added that Suriname has committed itself to several international conventions and therefore has several obligations. MP Jordan reminded parliament that a cess to clean potable water is a responsibility of the state. She pointed out that Suriname must keep in mind that there is a deadline for achieving the international development goals. In 2030 clean potable water must be within reach of all of the Surinamese citizens. “With just 4 years to go it is time for the government to make haste with addressing the potable water shortages in Marowijne. We must reach those goals. Clean potable water for all of the Surinamese people,” said MP Jordan.
