PARAMARIBO - Illegal construction are popping up alongside streets everywhere. Legislators who have taken notice of this phenomenon recently expressed...

their disapproval regarding this growing problem. MP Rabin Parmessar (NDP) wants the Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning (OWRO) to intervene stat and to remove sheds and houses that are constructed illegally alongside the public streets. “As a former minister of Public Works I can tell you that nobody would have dared to do this. I would have deployed a bulldozer at once to demolish illegal constructions”, said MP Parmessar who added that he has already discussed the issue with Vice President Gregory Rusland. MP Parmessar pointed out that firm action is still lacking despite the fact that he has received support for his opinion on the issue. He also pointed out that permits for constructions on the road sides are granted to people despite a ban on this. MP Parmessar mentioned the constructions that have popped up in the Jan Steenstraat and throughout Mon Plaisir. He seems it unacceptable that district commissioners hand out permits without consulting the Public Works Ministry. MP Parmessar wants the current minister of Public Works to enforce the rules and to raze illegal constructions to the ground.
