PARAMARIBO - The nation’s legislators who are currently debating potential reforms at the legislature also discussed the integrity of the attorney general.

Several members of the coalition publicly revealed that there is no trust in the current attorney general and also presented clear examples to prove their point. MP Vidjaiprekash Thakoer (VHP) from the opposition made it clear, however, that he does not agree with them and pointed out that he does not get the impression that there are people who are discontent with the performance of the attorney general.
“The information that I have indicates that there is no lack of honesty and integrity,” said MP Thakoer who added that no clear research was conducted and that he therefore wants to know which sources support the claims of the members of the coalition. MP Thakoer explained that “I am convinced that there is a shortage of capacity and personnel at the Public Prosecutor’s Office and that that could slow down its operations. “The Public Prosecutor’s Office is discussed again and again and that creates the impression that there is no trust in the Public Prosecutor’s Office. We must ask ourselves if actual research was conducted to determine if there is a lack of trust and if so we also want to know who conducted the research,” said MP Thakoer.
MP Ebu Jones (NDP) who presented the bill aimed at switching from the system of having only one attorney general to a system of having multiple attorney generals explained that the discussion is not only about the integrity of the current attorney general but that it is also about preventing the prosecution from randomly being used as a political tool. He also presented clear examples to explain why there are reasons to question the integrity of the current attorney general and why it is believed that she is being influenced by former president Chandrikapersad Santokhi who is currently a member of the opposition.
