Friday it was announced that the ferry would cross the river two more times before going out of service. The deputy  manager of the MV Canawaima Ferry Service, Amresh Kanhai, confirmed that the   Maritime Authority Suriname (MAS) had carried out an inspection onboard the boat and that it had drawn up a report which indicated that several improvements must be made to the boat urgently.  According to Kanhai, the  SDSM will take a look at the boat on Monday in order to determine which measures are necessary and under which conditions the ferry service can be resumed.  It is unclear when  MV Canawaima will be up and running again. The temporary shutdown has resulted in long lines being formed on both sides of the river as many people want to cross to the other side. Kanhai pointed out that many people still expect the boat to take them across at any moment. Some of the travellers who are left stranded on both sides of the river reportedly do not have enough money to seek alternative ways to cross the river or to stay at a hotel.
