at the China-Nepal border, when a glacial mountain collapse sent a tsunami-like surge of water, mud, and debris through the region. The flood killed more than 1,400 people and left roughly 5,600 missing. According to Nepal's disaster agency, rescuers have recovered 1,385 bodies with about 5,130 still missing; in China, 43 deaths and 519 missing have been reported. The combined toll stands at 1,428 dead and over 5,649 missing, including around 800 foreigners such as tourists and pilgrims. Foreign ministry spokesman Lok Bahadur Chhetri said about $57.67 million is needed for short-term recovery over the next six months, while roughly $4.71 billion is required for longer-term reconstruction.
