PARAMARIBO – MP Rabin Parmessar (NDP) recently criticized the manner in which the election results of each district are presented to the nation.
“There is a lack of uniformity and transparency but in the end the important thing is to make sure that the correct results are presented to the public,” said MP Parmessar who added that in each district the results are presented in a different manner. “There is no standard format, no fixed structure to give a clear oversight of the number of votes for each party and for each candidate. We already know that a lot went wrong at the polling stations and the main polling stations in the districts. The political parties kept a close eye on everything and sounded the alarm whenever that became necessary,” said the legislator from the opposition. “I made objections and I also indicated that I would file a complaint. There have been many complaints and I also mentioned those. It is not up to the authorities to collect these complaints and to review them one by one.” MP Parmessar emphasized that the political parties repeatedly called for transparency in the preparatory phase. “If one installs transparency at the beginning, one can prevent many unclarities and much distrust. Unfortunately that was not the case. Many chaotic situations popped up and there were also many comments about the unclear and incomplete reports,” said Parmessar who added that mistakes could damage the credibility of the elections. Parmessar made it clear that officials must guarantee transparency and uniformity in order to put the minds of voters at ease.
