PARAMARIBO - Gregory Rusland, chairman of the National Party Suriname (NPS), claimed that the Progressive Reform Party (VHP) had approached his party before offering him the pre-sidency in exchange for a joint venture.
However, Rusland rejected the offer and instead chose to collaborate with the National Democratic Party (NDP) which will give the NPS the vice presidency. The chairman of the NPS who appeared on the program of ABC called
Suriname Kiest that he had rejected the VHP’s offer because promises were not kept in the past five years. He pointed out that other parties and in particular Pertjajah Luhur (PL) made it clear that they would follow the decision of the NPS. The NPS, PL, ABOP, BEP and Alternatief 2020 (A20) recently signed an agreement in principle with the NDP. Rusland explained that he had already given his word to the NDP and that his word is his bond. He therefore could not accept other offers. Rusland added that for the past five years the NPS was ignored which is why it could not do its job accordingly. “We do not want to end up in the same situation,” said Rusland. It has become clear that other parties are discontent with the way the VHP ran the country these past five years. They claimed that the VHP does not keep its promises, that it lacks transparency and that it excludes coalition partners when important decisions must be made. These experiences have resulted in distrust and are the main reason why parties are not eager to collaborate with the VHP again.
