Number of labor inspectors must be tripled

PARAMARIBO - Health, Labor and Welfare Minister André Misiekaba recently made it clear that the number of labor inspectors in Suriname must be upgraded.

Times of Suriname

There are currently only 66 labor inspectors who have to keep an eye on about 10,000 companies that have officially been registered. The minister deems the current capacity inadequate especially given the future arrival of the oil and gas sector. Triple the number of labor inspectors is needed.

Minister Misiekaba explained that at least 150 inspectors are needed to be deployed nationwide. He expects parliament to approve the ministry’s 2026 budget so that the labor inspection department can be expanded. “More funds are needed to recruit and train new inspectors.” This year the first group of 25 assistant inspectors will be recruited and will be given the basic training. But this is not enough to strengthen the capacity and cover the whole country. The labor inspectors will be needed in the future to inspect the offshore drill platforms. “That is a new area and a new territory. We must not wait for their arrival. I hope that we will get the necessary support from parliament.”
