Despite its status as a protected area which is managed by Stichting Natuurbehoud Suriname (Stinasu) illegal miners have set up camp within the borders of the Brownsberg Nature Park. The OKGS seized equipment in the vicinity of the Irene Falls and also instructed the illegal miners to leave the park. Meanwhile the OKGS has discussed the borderline with Stinasu. During its visit to the Brownsberg Nature Park the OKGS also emphasized the importance of getting registered with the small scale gold miners. In July 2026 the Commission launched a soft launch of the registration of people who work in the gold sector. The pilot project will reportedly be carried out in various areas for six months. People who want to be registered can visit the main office of the OKGS-kantoor at the Mr. Jagernath Lachmonstraat 181. The OKGS which collaborates with the Defense Ministry, the Natural Resources Ministry, the Ministry of Justice, the DC’s in charge STINASU, tribal leaders, is expected to return to the Brownsberg Nature Park soon.
