
PARAMARIBO - Last Monday the nation’s legislators were full of praise of former President Ronald Venetiaan who passed away at the age of 89 and who was cremated last Tuesday.

Even the legislators from the factions of political parties that criticized his policies and even organized rallies to get his administration to step down described him as a big son of the nation. “He is one step ahead of us on the journey to the area where our human differences are of zero significance. Our service to others is all that remains,” said President Jennifer Simons in parliament where her political party, the National Democratic Party (NDP), opposed the administrations of Venetiaan who served three terms in office. On behalf of the National Party Suriname (NPS) MP Dorothy Hoever gave ode to Venetiaan who was not only the green party’s chairman but also its honorary chairman. “His leadership did not have any noise or drama but peace and thoughtfulness which he also radiated as a human. His qualities led to years of political and economic stability. A great Surinamese citizen has passed way,” said MP Hoever on behalf of the NPS faction.
MP Steven Reyme (A20) even described Venetiaan as a prophet. The leader of the BEO faction, MP Ronnie Asabina, described Venetiaan as a person with high moral values and principles.
