Parachutists steal the show at Independence Square

PARAMARIBO – The public that had assembled at the Independence Square on Independence Day got exactly what was promised namely a great parachuting show.

Times of Suriname

Thousands of people stood waiting for the parachuting show in the scorching sun after the parade. The team of parachutists that was led by Poetie Doerga made an impressive comeback. His team which had not given a performance since 2019 was asked to show its skills to the nation this year. 12 parachutists jumped solo while the 13th parachutist jumped with a passenger to color the sky above Paramaribo with their parachutes, the flags of the sponsors and of course the Surinamese flag. The flag of the Rudisa Group

of Companies could also be spotted high in the sky. Each landing ot the parachutists at the Independence Square triggered a roaring applause and enthusiastic cheers. The parachutists turned the 50th anniversary of the nation’s Independence Day into an unforgettable feast. “It was a real spectacle,” said Doerga who added that “we had enough room at the Independence Square.” Doerga explained that each landing had to take place at the center of the celebrations. And that it exactly what happened. One by one the jumpers made an entrance at the center of the Independence Square. But things did not go smoothly because the first parachutist came in too fast which is why he landed hard before rolling several times. Doerga confirmed that the man had scrapes in his hands and that he quickly recovered thanks to the swift aid from the soldiers and paramedicus. “He is doing okay,” said Doerga shortly after the first parachutist had made a rough landing. Doerga explained that this performance was more than just a show. “It was a tribute,” said Doerga. “I want to congratulate the entire nation and the president with the 50 years of independence. I hope that we will keep lifting our country and that we will keep talking positively about Suriname,” said Doerga with a proud voice. Doerga who had jumped above a big audience for the tenth time on Independence Day revealed his plans for the future. He wants to start a school for parachuting in Suriname. This was one of the big dreams of the late Desi Bouterse who was elected president of the Republic of Suriname twice. “I hope to find enough sponsors to start this school. Than everybody who wants to learn how to jump out of a plane with a parachute can do so in our own country.”
