BROKOPONDO - The frustration among parents whose children are enrolled at the Daniel Yveraar School in Klaaskreek reached its boiling point on Wednesday.

They reportedly took the teachers outside of the school before locking the school. The parents reportedly want to catch the government’s attention for the problems that have plagued this primary school for many years but which still have not been addressed. There was a poor turnhout at the school last Wednesday because of the parents’ protest. Despite the current situation the teachers pointed out that they were willing to work. The parents made it clear that their actions were not aimed against the teachers but that they wanted the government agencies to wake up as the current circumstances are unacceptable. They also made it clear that their children are entitled to learning in an environment that is not plagued by problems. One of the biggest problems is the lack of housing for the teachers who are assigned to the Daniel Yveraar School in Klaaskreek. There are currently only two houses available at the school but there are about twelve teachers. The teachers who are not provided with housing by the government must rent an apartment or house in Klaaskreek and pay the rent because the government does not cover the rent for them. The parents explained that several landlords have already terminated the lease while others have made it clear that they will follow suit. As a result of this the teachers will have no place to stay. One of the teachers explained that “it is not a new problem”. “We have had this problem for many years. Every year the same problem is presented but a solution is never presented”, said the teacher who added that “it is difficult for teachers to do thri utmost when they are abandoned.” There is also another problem: the school does not have a gardener to keep the school yard clean. The parents made it clear that they want more than a temporary solution. They want housing for the teachers and maintenance for the school.
