PARAMARIBO — Some parents of children who passed the 8th grade and must be enrolled in VO schools have recently expressed grave concern that they still haven’t received any word from the...
Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. Nathalie Bendanon told Times of Suriname that she still has not received a phone call from the ministry, but that she is keeping her fingers crossed as she wants her daughter to be enrolled in a school near her home or workplace. “I still have to buy school supplies, but I do not know what I have to buy exactly. I also do not know which logo must be on the school uniform.” Bendanon registered her daughter in August but is still waiting for a phone call about the school transfer. Another parent also complained, as her son still has not been transferred. “The school will start in two weeks. My son is eager about the new school year, but he is also disappointed about not having been enrolled yet.” All of the parents made it clear that they do not want their children, who are 11 years of age and older, to be enrolled at a school far from home. They explained they would not be able to afford it, especially because of high costs. The parents pointed out that they still can’t afford a car. “We don’t know what we are up against. Why is it always a problem to transfer pupils from one school to another?” A school principal explained that many parents ask her to enroll their child, but she simply does not have room for additional students. “Otherwise we will have overcrowded classrooms on October 1st. I hope the ministry will present a solution soon.”
