PARAMARIBO – The parents of children who go to schools located in the hinterland recently made it clear that they hope that these schools will also start on October 1st just like in all of the other districts.
They urge the government to spre no efforts in making this possible. Hilda Apai, one of the concerned parents from the hinterland, remembers that the previous school year started at the end of November. “That is two months after the schools in Paramaribo had started. I hope that the schools in the hinterland will be given the same priority as the ones in the city,” said Apai who added that the entire education sector must be given priority regardless of the location of the schools. “The children in the hinterland have the same rights when it comes to education as the ones in Paramaribo or the other regions. Why does education start on time there each year while we have to wait?” Apai urges officials to take swift action. “We hope that the teachers will be transported to their stations this week and that all of the other things such as school supplies, safety and Housing are taken care of before October 1st.” Last Friday President Jennifer Simons announces that the school bus drivers and the boat owners would be asked to transport the teachers. Reports indicate that some of these bus drivers and boat owners still have not received payments for their services. The head of state will discuss the issue with the minister of Finance and Planning so that partial payments could commence in order to make sure that the teachers are transported to their work stations.
