MPs recently made it clear to Justice and Safety Minister Harish Monorath that they expect results. MP Rabin Parmessar (NDP) complained about the slow pace at which the investigation is being carried out. He pointed out that the issue is much more serious than is presented. MP Parmessar explained that reliable sources from the top of the Police Force Suriname (KPS) told him that the police already know who is behind the theft of the mercury and where the mercury was brought. He promised that he would not sweep this matter under the rug. Minister Monorath claimed that “the investigation is still ongoing”. “We are still busy with the analysis of data from other channels and that takes time. That is what the police commissioner told me”, said Minister Monorath. But the MPs made it clear that this answer would not sufficient and it even infuriated MP Parmessar. MP Parmessar wanted to know what was caught on the security cameras and at what moment the security cameras were possibly turned off, which police officers were on duty and if he made it clear that the integrity of the police must never be doubted. Minister Monorath assured parliament that the ministry and the Police Force Suriname would spare no efforts to solve this case. He also assured parliament that the integrity of the police is still intact. “If it were up to me and if I had all of the evidence, the suspects would have been arrested a long time ago”, said Minister Monorath.
