PARAMARIBO - Workers from Surpost recently went on a strike because they still have not received their salary for December 2025.

Walter Uiterloo, chairman at the DPWO, explained that the workers have not received any money for nearly 2 months. The workers also have not received their secondary benefits such as their bonus, vacation pay and uniform allowance. Union Chairman
Uiterloo pointed out that the late payment of the salaries at Surpost is not a new problem. He also pointed out that the situation has worsened because of the mismanagement of the general director who has already been fired. Surpost is a state company that receives subsidies via the Ministry of Finance and Planning because it is not fully self sufficient. “Although Surpost has become independent, it still can’t operate financial independently. Politically appointed executives and a chronic shortage of funds play an important role,” said Uiterloo who added that the board of directors has repeatedly urged management to hand in essential documents but the director who was fired failed to fulfill his obligations as of December 2025. The board of directors explained that the director has been on sick leave and that he was seeing a psychiatrist.
“People are hungry. Food must be put on the table. Landlords are threatening to opt for education and banks are waiting for payments. The financial pressure on the workers is huge,” said Uiterloo. “
