dumping their garbage left and right. Garbage was reportedly dumped at the corner of the Roekoenweg in the Commewijne District even though there is a sign that clearly indicates that the illegal dumping of garbage is strictly prohibited. It seems that the hefty fines do not discourage people from dumping their garbage. The new rules clearly state that the illegal dumping of garbage carries a fine of SRD 1,000 to SRD 10,000 depending on the amount of garbage. People who do not keep their lot clean and free of bushes risk getting a fine of SRD 1,000 to SRD 10,000. Anyone who does not keep his or her side of the road clean and who is caught burning garbage or grass and leaves risks getting a fine of SRD 1,000. People who place cars, car parts or other obstacles on the side of the road will be given a fine of SRD 3,500. The hefty fines went into effect on September 15th but it is still unclear whether other measures are necessary to prevent enviornment pollution. The government has reportedly authorized environment inspector to impose fines whenever they detect violations.

District Commissioner Rajiv Ramsahai urged the people in his district to report the illegal dumping of garbage. He asked the members of the community to write down the exact time, location and the license plate number of the polluters before sharing the information with the authorities. The situation at the Roekoenweg has made it clear that a sign and fines that go as high as SRD 10,000 have little to no effect if perpetrators believe that they are untouchable.
