The director at Kennedy Stichting, Lea Welzijn-Overeem, announced that the employees will resume working after they have received their salary. She also told Times of Suriname that the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) has asked for a little more patience while it addresses the payment issue. Welzijn-Overeem pointed out that officials indicated that “it is expected that the money will be deposited” but that she wants to see it first. “I must see it first”, said the director who added that “the workers no longer believe the promises that are made”. Welzijn-Overeem explained that the workers made it clear that they will get back to work but only after they have been paid. “The payment of salaries at Kennedy Stichting are always delayed. The salary for August was paid in September. The salaries were usually paid on the 23rd of every month. The director expressed concern about the consequences for the children who have been given shelter at the foundation. The Kennedy Stichting provides shelter to children from Commewijne, Saramacca, Sipaliwini and Brokopondo. If the workers do not show up at the work place, the foundation cannot offer the necessary care to the children. “Things can’t go on this way. If no solution is presented, it is possible that the foundation will have to close indefinitely.”
