PARAMARIBO - The detention of chief inspector M.T. and deputy inspector C.P. has reportedly been extended with 30 days. Both men have been charged with the theft of about SRD 1 million.
When they were arraigned on August 7th, the examining magistrale deemed their arrest lawful. Sources revealed that there were multiple reports about the misconduct of both inspectors but that their superiors failed to take disciplinary action against them. The police commissioner who was reportedly aware of the irregularities that took place at the police station where both suspects were stationed and the theft of money and drugs from a safe at the Narcotics Brigade but failed to take action was relieved of his duties last week. When Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath came into office he made it clear that “involvement of police officials in serious offences is unacceptable.” He also made it clear that there must be full transparency within the police force and that corruption will be tackled firmly. According to Minister Monorath, the police commissioner should have sounded the alarm from the moment he was informed of the irregularities.
