the Commewijne District. The two suspects were arrested on an assault charge. Reports indicate that the incident started when an illegal immigrant got into a fight in the Suribet shop. The illegal immigrant then called the police. When the policeman who had responded to the call arrived at the shop, the two suspects turned against him. The men threw a glass bottle at him and attacked him. The policeman who felt cornered pulled out his gun and fired a warning shot. The illegal immigrant had reportedly sustained injuries as a result of the altercation and required medical treatment. He has been taken into police custody for entering the country illegally. The police force has made it clear firm action will be taken against people who attack officers of the law. The investigation is ongoing.
