PARAMARIBO - The candidates from various political parties are not only trying to defeat their political opponents but they are also trying to take down candidates from their own party.
Due to the current election system each party can only hand in one list of candidates for a seat in parliament so the candidates feel it necessary to push others who are also on the same list as them aside, so that they can reel in more votes in order to come out on top. With less than two weeks until election day these internal election campaigns have become a common thing in the biggest political parties. Some of the political parties such as the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the National Party Suriname (NPS) have urged their candidates and their support teams to refrain from infighting. The support teams of some candidates are reportedly urging voters to support their ‘leader’ instead of other candidates who are on the same list.
This is happening publicly in the districts Saramacca and Wanica. Recently things nearly got out of hand between the supporters of Mahinder Jogi and Sherin Bansi. Jogi and Bansi are both on the list of candidates from the VHP. The leaders of several political parties have publicly condemned the infighting.
