GUYANA - Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo emphasized that despite ongoing poverty, the PPP/C Government is actively implementing measures to boost income retention and ease families’ financial burdens.
Speaking at a PPP/C public meeting in Enmore, East Coast Demerara, he outlined a five-year plan to lift citizens from poverty, focusing on job creation across sectors such as hospitals (≈6,000 positions), hotels (≈6,000 positions), and housing (40,000 homes over the term, ~8,000/year). He noted the prior job losses under APNU and framed the current effort as building opportunity rather than widening the gap. Local economic activity will be stimulated through concrete road projects and drainage improvements, with all community drains to be concreted to expand earning possibilities. The administration aims to lower taxes and avoid new taxes for the next five years, enabling greater income retention. Education and healthcare costs will be reduced, with free access to further studies or new skills through government initiatives. In education, every child from nursery to secondary will receive a cash grant of 200,000 (including 200,000 (including 100,000 for transportation), benefiting both private and public systems; textbooks and hot meals will continue with improvements. Utility relief includes ongoing subsidies for electricity and fuel, and the gas-to-energy project is expected to cut electricity prices by about 50% and reduce cooking gas costs. Homeownership support will persist and expand, with grants for vulnerable families to build or improve homes. Overall, Jagdeo presented a multi-faceted strategy aimed at increasing income retention, reducing living costs, and expanding access to education, healthcare, housing, and infrastructure to lift citizens out of poverty.
