PARAMARIBO – The government has generously raised the money that is gifted to people who celebrate their centenary birthday and couples that celebrate their wedding anniversary.

The new figures are anchored in a decree that was issued on October 16th, 2026. Home Affairs (BIZA) Minister Marinus Bee explained that the old figures were outdated and that the government therefore decided to give the green light for a financial gift hike. Over a week ago there was a lot of commotion as people expressed their discontent with the low sums of money that were given. The minister claimed that the government had been busy preparing the adjustments for quite some time but that certain administrative procedures had to be followed first. People who celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary will receive SRD 15,000 instead of SRD 500 while people who celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary will get SRD 20,000 instead of SRD 600. Couples that celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary will be gifted SRD 25,000 instead of SRD 700 while the ones that celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary will receive SRD 30,000 instead of SRD 750. People who turn 100 will receive SRD 25,000 instead of SRD 1,000. The decree will have a retroactive effect until July 1st, 2025 which means that people who celebrated one of the above mentioned wedding anniversaries or their 100th centenary birthday will also get the rest of the money. The minister urged these people to go to the District Commissioner’s Office that is in charge of the area where they reside. The DC’s Office will then contact the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Office of the President.
