PARAMARIBO - Residents from Land van Dijk have once again asked the government to ad-dress the many problems that they face in their neighbourhood on a daily basis.
They complained that most of the streets have many potholes and that this becomes a big problem whenever it rains. The streets are often flooded because the drainage system is clogged. The residents pointed out that all of a sudden many politicians are showing up on their doorstep and that these visitors promise to do many things if they win but that they have heard all of the empty promises before. “We no longer believe in promises. We want to see action. I often ask myself when we will get a government that will actually address the drainage system thoroughly,” said one of the female residents. The residents complained that the problems have existed for many years but that not one single government has solved the problem. “I have lived in the Land van Dijkstraat for most of my life and this road is always flooded whenever it rains. The people then have to walk through the street to reach their destinations but it is not sanitary,” said a senior citizen. Another resident urged the government to track down the owners of the lots that require ‘maintenance.’ The residents also want pedestrian lanes so that their children no longer have to walk on the streets to get to their schools and back. They have already sent a letter to the minister of Public Works, urging him to address the problems.
