Angry rice farmers who are fed up with being ignored dumped their paddy in front of the Nickerie District Commissioner’s Office last Wednesday. They complained that the merchants are no longer buying ...

their paddy and that they have waited for the administration of President Chandrikapersad Santokhi to come up with a solution but that they still haven't heard anything. Ashwin Jagmohansing,
the chairman of the union that represents the rice farmers in Nickerie, made it clear that the farmers want to talk about possible solutions with the government but that their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. The farmers were very emotional because they have worked hard in the fields and be sure they have covered a lot of expenses.
Rice Farmer Ramdjiawan explained that he stood in line at the mill with his truck for four days but that the owner of the mill told him that he would not buy any paddy. “If the paddy has been in the truck for four days, the paddy goes bad and can only be given to chickens and ducks.”
Chanderbhan Dwarka explained that if the paddy stays too long in a truck,it loses its value.
Ashwin Jagmohansing, chairman of the BPN, explained that the rice farmers have a couple of solutions but that the government refuses to listen. The farmers still have to pay the local gas stations and banks. The bank loans certainly aren't cheap and the farmers have struggled with financial problems for the past fifty years. The farmers have no where else to dry their paddy which is why they dumped it in front of the DC’s Office. They made it clear that the fight has just begun. “It is now or never,” said the rice farmers. The police brought three people namely Chairman Jagmohansing, Chanderbhan
Dwarka and the driver of the truck to the police station for questioning. Jagmohansing and Dwarka were allowed to leave but the driver was taken into police custody.
