They explained that so far they have only received fertilizer for the first round of fertilization. “We still have not received any fertilizer for the second and the third round.” The government had assured them that they would receive one bag of fertilizer per hectare but according to the farmers the government only kept its promise for the first round. The farmers made it clear that they can no longer afford to keep waiting because the crops must be fertilized at the right moment in order to guarantee good results. Chanderbhan Dwarka told Times of Suriname that “the situation is very serious”. “Farmers have to buy their own fertilizer and a bag of fertilizer costs about SRD 2,000. The price has gone up which means that production costs have also risen. The farmers had counted on the government to keep its promise but they still have not received the fertilizer. The crops can wait no longer”, said Dwarka. The farmers therefore think that opting for financial aid instead of fertilizer is the best choice.
