PARAMARIBO - ‘s Lands Hospital recently opened it’s new children's center that will offer shelter, medical treatment and counseling to children who were the victims of abuse.

With this Center the hospital wants to make sure that the victims and their families get all of the care that they need at one location. Pediatrician Laurindo Kloof emphasized that the center was necessary as the results from a national research that was conducted in 2015 indicate that about 70,000 children become the victims of abuse each year. The children who participated in the research indicated that they had either been abused sexually or that they had been hit, kicked or slapped. Kloof emphasized that the problem is possibly much bigger and explained that the victims have to visit multiple institutes and that they are ‘screened’ multiple times. A child that has been abused sexually therefore has to talk about the traumatic experience multiple times which-according to the pediatrician- is “another trauma”. The new center must make that a thing of the past as children and their parents can go to one place for medical care, counseling and further support. It will also focus on prevention with programs such as Peking Tori which raises awareness regarding child abuse via social media. The videos that were put on Facebook and TikTok have already been viewed about two million times. Doctor Kloof pointed out that this shows that there is a demand for information and awareness. The center also wants to focus on research and will collect data to find out in which areas child abuse occurs and which groups are extremely vulnerable. That information will help to develop and implement programs aimed at prevention. Doctor Kloof also explained that child abuse has a negative impact on the future of the victims as these children are not only left traumatized but also have trouble concentrating while also having low self-esteem and behavioral problems. The victims of child abuse could also start performing poorly at school. Kloof pointed out his research shows that the victims of child abuse could have serious problems later in life such as additional and chronic diseases. “Suriname has a big problem”, said Doctor Kloof. “It is often said that children are the future but that future must also be protected.”
