The judge not only ruled in favor of the foundation but also ordered the state to grant permission to the foundation to organize the annual activities in the Palm Garden on August 7, 8 and 9 in celebration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The state reportedly has 24 hours to execute the verdict. Josien Aloema-Tokoe, chairperson of Sams, pointed out that the verdict was sent to the Office of the President last Tuesday. Sams filed the lawsuit at the start of July after the government has given another organization permission to organize the activities and the Amazone Market in the Palm Garden. It had asked the court to force the government to take a U-turn on its decision because it had organized the activities and the market for more than 20 years. Stichting Amazone Markt Suriname claimed that it has the necessary experience to also organize this annual event in the Palm Garden this year.
