PARAMARIBO – The board of directors at the Telecommunications Authority Suriname (TAS) wants to restore order after the ruling of the Court of Justice.

The chairman of the board of directors, Emanuel Scheek, explained that the ruling gives the board more room to do its job. The board of directors wants to launch an internal investigation into the expenditures that were made at TAS during the past couple of years. The Court of Justice recently ruled in favor of the board of directors in the lawsuit that had been filed by former director Wendy Jap A Joe. It evidently rejected all of the objections that were presented by Jap A Joe. The ruling of the Court of Justice therefore maintains the ruling of the lower court. Scheek explained that the ruling confirms that the board wants to do its job according to the existing rules. He did not rule out that more legal actions would be taken but made it clear that the board is prepared to take those actions in as well. Scheek pointed out that the board wants to find out why there is suddenly more mmoney in the bank accounts than in the same period in the past couple of years. He explained that the board did not squander the available funds and that it did not spend money on expenditures that were not necessary such as business trips. The investigation must reveal where the money of the TAS went and if people can be held accountable for irregularities that may come to light. “The money belongs to the state and the nation. If the investigation reveals that people are responsible for certain things, they must be held accountable for their actions.”
