PARAMARIBO – When a man who had gone missing in the forest and was found alive after several days many people expressed their relief but they also criticized the police.

Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath made it clear that the people must realize that the police force has a limited capacity. The police were criticized for their absence when the first wave of search and rescue parties went into the forest. Minister Monorath acknowledged that it took a while for the police operation to commence but he emphasized that a search in a forest region requires assistance from experts. “Not every policeman is equipped to conduct a search in the forest. You need trackers, forest rangers and soldiers who have received special training,” said Minister Monorath. A combined operation was eventually carried out by forty men who searched for the missing man in the forest for three days and three nights. A new type of drone that can also detect heat and energy in the forest was also deployed. The minister explained that the new technology was used intensively during the operation. But the question whether Suriname actually has an adequate protocol for tracking down missing persons in the hinterland remains. Minister Monorath pointed out that he has not come across such a protocol which states who has to handle such cases and which police units must be activated immediately. “There must be a protocol for when somebody is lost in the forest. The protocol must be formulated,” said the minister who added that a bigger budget is needed so that vehicles, extra drones and a faster communication network could be purchased.
