PARAMARIBO – The representatives of six political parties which have reeled in one or more parliamentary seats gathered in Courtyard Marriot on Tuesday night to sign an agreement in principle.
The National Democratic Party (NDP) that will possibly get 18 seats, the ABOP with 6 seats, the National Party Suriname (NPS) with 6 seats, Pertjajah
Luhur (PL) with 2 seats, BEP) with 1 seat and Alternatief 2020 (A20) which 1 seat intent on forming the new coalition. The preliminary election results suggest that these six parties have 34 seats in total. This means that they could have the two third majority in parliament if they work together.
“Although this is an agreement in principle and not a formal accord, the parties indicate that they have paid the foundation for further negotiations. Last Monday night the parties had meetings. Future negotiations must take place to reach a final agreement,” said the spokesman of the NDP, Ricardo Panka. The parties will continue the negotiations in the next couple of days and weeks.
Panka made it clear that the parties are keeping a close eye on the processing of the votes. “We hear and see so many things and we also see several strange things happening. About two days after the elections the ballot cards from a number of polling stations still have not been counted and processed. This is cause for concern,” said Panka.
