Minister Monorath:

Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath recently explained that time and time again it becomes clear that strict traffic rules are not enough to guarantee traffic safety. He pointed out that despite of all of the traffic rules and measures traffic accidents have already claimed the lives of 8 people this year. After he came into office, the traffic fines were raised but the number of injuries still remains high. Statistics indicate that an average of 6 people sustain injuries in traffic accidents every day.

Minister Monorath claimed that a lack of knowledge and respect for traffic rules poses a big problem. “It seems as if people do not know what a main road is, when they have to give right of way, when they may turn left and when they have to wait,” said Minister Monorath who added that drivers as well as moped riders and cyclists drive recklessly in traffic. “No right of way is given to ‘weak’ road users but at the same time moped riders and cyclists place themselves in situations that could cost them their lives.” Minister Monorath explained that awareness programs and road modifications are necessary. He also added that mentality also plays an important role. Minister Monorath urged the people to support the police and other authorities when they take action. “Together we can make traffic safety so that such tragedies do not keep repeating themselves.”
