PARAMARIBO - Students of several technical schools recently complained that they are always the ones who get the short end of the stick...

because of the conflicts within the education sector. They explained that they understand why teachers who haven’t received their salaries after having waited several months are on strike but they are also getting increasingly concerned about their future. The students explained that the strike of the teachers is taking place in the middle of the period for the school exams and that the exams have therefore been postponed. “We understand that the teachers are entitled to their money and we are therefore urging the authorities to pay them as soon as possible,” several students said. The teachers who are members of the BLTO went on strike last week and have not shown up at their designated schools. They made it clear that the lessons will be resumed after their demands have been met. Some of the teachers started working 6 months ago but still haven’t received any money. The parents of the children who are enrolled at the technical schools also expressed their frustration. A concerned woman told Times of Suriname that she had hired a tutor for her son to prepare him for the exams. But now that the exams have been postponed, she will have to pay for extra lessons. “This creates additional financials costs,” said the woman. A principal told Times of Suriname that dozens of parents call the school each day to ask when the lessons will be resumed. But the teachers are sticking to their demands. “If the focus is always on the students, nobody will take the situation of teachers into account. We have worked and have the right to receive our salary,” the teachers said.
