PARAMARIBO – Last Saturday the Republic of Suriname bid a final farewell to one of its former heads of state namely Jules Wijdenbosch. Wijdenbosch who was the president of Suriname from 1996 until 2000 passed away on April 30th at the age of 83.
Representatives of the government, the diplomatic corps, social organizations and citizens stood in line to pay their last respects to the man who had made his mark in the political landscape of Suriname.
In an emotional speech President Chandrikapersad Santokhi spoke of the achievements of Wijdenbosch for the nation and his commitment to the development of Suriname. The state funeral was concluded with military honours after which the coffin of the former head of state was escorted by relatives and friends to its final resting place. The Santokhi administration has announced a period of national mourning in honor of the life and legacy of Wijdenbosch.
