with the ministers of Defense, Justice & Police and Foreign Affairs,  International Trade and Collaboration at her Office before meeting with the heads of the nation’s security agencies, the chairman of parliament and the leaders of the parliamentary factions to discuss the actual state of Venezuela’s affairs. The Bureau of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) convened on Saturday, January 3, 2026, following the United States’ military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.  In a statement issued from the CARICOM Secretariat, the Bureau reaffirmed the region’s commitment to international law, multilateralism, and the principles of the United Nations Charter, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states and human dignity.

“The Region reiterates its call for peaceful dialogue through diplomatic channels to ensure Venezuela’s stability, good governance, democracy and prosperity for the people of Venezuela,” the statement read. The Republic of Suriname made nit clear that it supports the statement of the Caribbean Community (Caricom). It also emphasized that the rule of international law must be followed and respected at all times. Suriname called on all the parties involved to work towards finding peaceful solutions while maintaining international law and regional solidarity. The government issued a statement in response to the recent developments. “Suriname is very concerned about the escalation of the security situation in our region as a result of the air attacks in the Bolivarian Republic of  Venezuela. The CARICOM held an urgent meeting which President Jennifer Simons also attended.  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Collaboration has already contacted the Surinamese representatives  in Venezuela and it can be said that they are all safe. The government will keep working to ensure the safety of Surinamese nationals who are either affected or who could be affected by the current situation. The government is also sparing no efforts to ensure the safety return to Suriname of Surinamese citizens who might be stranded in the region. The situation will be discussed further on CARICOM level. Our hearts go out to the islands whose economies are directly hit by this situation.

Suriname urges  international including the Organization of American States, the United States and the international community to work towards p ace in the region and to hold on to the international rule of law. Meanwhile the government is taking the necessary measures given the possible movement of refugees and urges everybody to remain calm.
