PARAMARIBO - The Simons administration will reportedly opt for renegotiations in order to get a better deal with Chinalco.

The agreement that was reached between the previous administration and the bauxite giant is currently being reviewed. The current administration will install a special commission to hold talks with Chinalco. The government’s plan was discussed during a meeting between a delegation from Chinalco and Acting President Gregory Rusland. He made it clear that back when he was a legislator, he was against the Chinalco deal because there were no guarantees that the company would process the bauxite in Suriname.
The renegotiations are aimed at getting a better deal for the Surinamese people. The leader of the delegation who is also the director of Chinalco, Bo Qu, promised that the collaboration would be created a win-win situation. Chinalco plans on extracting bauxite in the western part of Suriname. The agreement in principle was inked in November 2024 by the then government. As part of that agreement Chinalco would invest about $426 million for the construction of a mine and infrastructure near Apoera. Suriname would have a 13% stake in the mining and the infrastructure companies but also in the management team. The deal was shelved after the villagers from Apoera and the surrounding areas protested against it.
