PARAMARIBO – On behalf of the Fire Department Suriname (KBS) fire officials recently went to the Herman E. Gooding Police Bureau to report the theft of SRD 100,000.

49-year-old R.S. who manages the register at the KBS has been identified as the suspect. In July 2026 R.S. had to withdraw SRD 250,000 at the Central Bank of Suriname for the Ministry of Justice and Safety. R.S. and a police officer who works at the Ministry of Justice and Safety picked up the money. SRD 150,000 was meant for the Budget and Financial Affairs Division at the Ministry of Justice and Safety and was delivered properly. The rest of the money was for the Fire Department Suriname but was never delivered. On August 19th police officers from the Herman E. Gooding Police Bureau tried to track down and arrest R.S. but he was nowhere to be found. The police officers managed to contact him via his phone and told him to visit the police bureau. When R.S. showed up at the police bureau, he was taken into police custody. During the course of the investigation the suspect confessed to having taken SRD 100,000 and he also revealed that he had previously embezzled SRD 269,000. Investigators are currently trying to find out if he has embezzled more money. R.S. was the only person who was stationed at the financial department of the Fire Department Suriname which is how it was possible for him to embezzle huge sums of money. They also made it clear that the director of Operational Services was unjustly linked to this embezzlement case.
