Antonius Pokie, an official from the Organization of Bus and Boat Owners in Suriname (OBS) who is tasked with the transportation of these teachers, explained that the OBS is working with a schedule to get the teachers to their designated schools. Many of these teachers are leaving behind their families to work at a remote location. One of the teachers pointed out that she hopes that officials will also focus on the safety of teachers. She explained that “some teachers are sent to very remote locations and that they are dependent on transportation to take them across the land and water.” “We are going to remote locations so we want to feel safe. We are doing this for out children because they are the future.” Many teachers made it clear that “it is also important for officials to focus on the circumstances under which they have to work.”
