THAILAND – Thousands of protesters gathered in the Thai capital on Saturday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra,...
amid growing outrage over a leaked phone call with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Demonstrators took to the streets following revelations of a June 15 phone conversation in which Paetongtarn urged Hun Sen—currently the president of Cambodia’s Senate and still a major political influence—not to listen to “the other side” in Thailand, referring to a vocal Thai army general. In the call, she claimed the general “just wants to look cool.”
The general in question commands the region where a deadly border clash occurred. One Cambodian soldier was killed during an armed confrontation in a disputed area on May 28. The leaked phone call has triggered a series of investigations in Thailand that could potentially lead to Paetongtarn’s removal from office.
Protesters, waving Thai flags and holding signs, occupied sections of the streets around Bangkok’s Victory Monument. A large stage was set up at the site, where speakers emphasized their patriotism and voiced concerns about the escalating border tensions.
“This appears to be a well-attended rally, with a strong and vocal presence,” reported Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng from Bangkok. “There are lots of speeches, whistles, and noise—all calling loudly for Prime Minister Paetongtarn to resign. Protesters argue that the phone call has undermined Thailand and its military, placing her in a very precarious position.”
Many prominent figures in the protest are affiliated with the so-called Yellow Shirts—a group known for their loyalty to the Thai monarchy. The Yellow Shirts have long opposed Paetongtarn’s father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is widely reported to have a close relationship with Hun Sen. (Aljazeera)
