in complained about the high bills that are being presented to them. The collision that took place at the corner of the Johannes Mungrastraat and the Veldhuizenlaan and which caused the bus to roll over se efal times claimed 4 lives that day.

A relative of a passenger who is still recovering at the hospital explained that a bill of about SRD 10,000 from the ambulance service must be paid. Then there are also the bills for the medication and other medical treatments. Other relatives pointed out that on the day of the accident the workers at the Emergency Room of the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) refused to lift a finger as long as the costs for admission had not been paid in full. “It is inhumane,” said a relative. “At that moment money should not have been important at all,” said another relative who became angry just talking about the events that took place after the accident. The families expressed their disappointment and made it clear that the healthcare system must be improvement. They called on Health Minister Andre Misiekaba to investigate the events and to take measures.

Legislators who listened to the complaints of the families deemed them regrettable and assured that they would investigate these incidents. They indicated that they would discuss the issue with the minister of Health and that they would insist on an evaluation of the policy on emergency rooms and payment of the admission fee. The families hope that their complaints will lead to a structural improvement of the services at the ER.
