PARAMARIBO – The number of homeless people that are living on the streets in the inner city of Paramaribo remains cause for concern. Louis Vismale, chairman of Stichting 1 voor 12,...

explained that homeless persons are taken off the streets every day but that they return to the streets shortly afterwards. “The lack of funds to establish a shelter remains a huge obstacle which is why not structural solution can be found”, said Vismale who added that permanent shelter is needed to keep the homeless persons from ending up back on the streets. “We are active in the field on a daily basis and keep getting homeless persons off the streets. Sometimes we get 4, sometimes 5 and sometimes even 6 in a day”, said Vismale. The homeless persons who are taken off the streets are given a shower, a haircut and new clothes before returning to the streets. “As long as there is no permanent shelter available, the organization will be stuck in this situation. The homeless persons are taken to a location at
Geyersvlijt where they are given food, drinks, a haircut and new clothes. The clothes are donated by Stichting 1 voor 12”, said Vismale who added that the homeless persons are asked to behave. Vismale made it clear that it is essential for the homeless persons to be given structural guidance. The structural guidance can only be provided at a permanent shelter where they could stay for a long period. Vismale explained that he already has a location where the homeless persons could be given shelter but that it still needs a lot of work which is why additional funds are required. He pointed out that “I am willing to also put my own money into the project”. “But I am stil dependent on the funds that I still have to receive from the government.”
