USA - President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he will impose heavy tariffs on Russia if there is no deal to end the Ukraine war within 50 days.
He plans to introduce secondary tariffs targeting Russia’s trading partners to isolate Moscow economically. Trump emphasized that trade can help end wars. During a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, they discussed a renewed pipeline for US weapons, which European countries will purchase and send to Ukraine. Countries involved include Germany, Finland, Canada, Norway, Sweden, the UK, and Denmark.
Trump, who has long touted his friendly relationship with Putin, previously said Russia was more willing than Ukraine to negotiate peace, but Russia’s relentless attacks on civilian areas have tested his patience. In April, he urged Putin to “STOP!” bombing Kyiv, and in May called Putin “crazy.” Zelenskyy highlighted the need for US leadership and noted Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its defenses and push for harsher sanctions on Russia.
Russia continues to bombard Ukrainian cities with drones and missiles, with June recording the highest civilian casualties in three years. Meanwhile, Moscow is attempting to push back Ukrainian forces along the 1,000-kilometer front. Trump confirmed that the US will send more Patriot missile systems to Ukraine, with European countries also contributing. Germany has already supplied three Patriots and is considering funding more, while other nations weigh additional support.
Top allies like Senator Lindsey Graham believe weapons flows will increase significantly soon, helping Ukraine defend itself. Russian officials argue that constructive dialogue is more effective than pressure and that communication between Russia and the US will continue despite efforts to disrupt it. (Jamaica Gleaner)
