UKRAINE – More than 120 firefighters were battling a blaze at an oil depot in the Russian city of Sochi, sparked by a Ukrainian drone attack, regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said early Sunday via the Telegram messaging app.

In the Krasnodar region on the Black Sea, where Sochi is located, a fuel tank with a capacity of 2,000 cubic meters (70,000 cubic feet) caught fire, Russia’s RIA news agency reported, citing emergency officials.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense said in its daily morning update on Telegram that air defense units destroyed 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, including one over the Krasnodar region and 60 over the Black Sea. The ministry only reports the number of drones it claims to have destroyed, not the total launched by Ukraine.
Rosaviatsia, Russia’s civil aviation authority, temporarily suspended flights at Sochi Airport to ensure air safety, later announcing on Telegram that flights had resumed as of 0200 GMT Sunday (10 p.m. ET Saturday). Reuters was unable to independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian officials.
The attack, which Kondratyev said occurred in Sochi’s Adler district, marks the latest Ukrainian strike on infrastructure inside Russia that Kyiv considers vital to Moscow’s war efforts. A woman was killed in the Adler district during a Ukrainian drone attack late last month, but attacks on Sochi—a city that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympic Games—have been rare during the war, which Russia began in February 2022.
The Krasnodar region is also home to the Ilsky refinery near the city of Krasnodar—one of the largest in southern Russia and a frequent target of Ukrainian drone strikes.
Also on Sunday, the governor of Russia’s Voronezh region reported that four people were injured in a Ukrainian drone strike that caused several fires. Meanwhile, the military administration of Kyiv said Russia launched a missile attack on the Ukrainian capital.
Russia’s defense ministry added that its units destroyed 18 Ukrainian drones over the Voronezh region, which borders Ukraine. (CNN)
