fundamental rights of the state employees are being ignored. During a meeting with Labor, Employment and Youth Affairs Minister Steven Mac and the deputy minister of Home Affairs (BIZA), Maurits Hassankhan, it became clear that Ravaksur Plus’ demand for a raise would once again be rejected. The administration of President Chandrikapersad Santokhi claimed that the national budget for 2025 still has not been approved and that the state income is low. According to the government, there are also structural deficits. The unions also disapprove of the fact that the government is reluctant to lower its income taxes. The only thing that the government is willing to do is to review and adjust the tariffs for working overtime. However, a technical adjustment would only become possible as of January 1st, 2026.
Ravaksur Plus responded to the government’s reluctance by suspending the negotiations to determine it's next step. “It is unacceptable for the government to ignore the needs of the groups,” said the labor federation. Within the next couple of days it will become clear if the unions will go on strike. The labor federation made it clear that giving a raise and tax cuts are not a luxury but necessary measures aimed at repairing the purchasing power of workers in the current economic climate.
