President Trump has significantly intensified measures in recent months, cutting off fuel supplies and threatening broader action. Following Venezuela's socialist leader Nicolás Maduro being overthrown in January and the ongoing US campaign against Iran, Trump has repeatedly suggested Cuba could be next, remarking Thursday that after dealing with Iran, "on our way back, we'll just make a little brief stopover". He denied the new sanctions were aimed at accelerating the island's collapse. Díaz-Canel accused Trump of trying to "strengthen the blockade" and vowed Cubans would "resist the imperialist onslaught". Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said the "vile" sanctions would be met with "greater unity". The fuel embargo since January has left Cuba unable to run generators for its crumbling power grid, causing outages of up to 22 hours daily, water shortages, and severe scarcity of food and medicine. Transport is virtually at a standstill, with the country reliant on aid from Mexico and China.
