Mass fish deaths:

Villages receive food parcels

PARAMARIBO – The Office of the President recently started providing food parcels to the communities that have been hit hard by the pollution of the Saramacca River.

Times of Suriname

Several weeks ago the nation was shocked by the news of mass fish deaths in the Saramacca River. Reports indicate that about 200 households from the Amerindian village of Pikin Saron who can no longer use the water nor the fish from this river received food parcels and potable water on July 28th. The administration of President Jennifer Simons has urged the villagers not to use the water from the river and to also refrain from consuming fish from the area. Many families rely on the river as it is their biggest source of food and income. Chief Clarise Moera-Awalie from Pikin Saron applauded the aid parcels. “Our people use the river on a daily basis and are dependent on catching fish for food and income. These parcels are therefore a big help”, said the village chief who added that “it is the second time that the Office of the President has provided aid to the village”. Although the residents are grateful for the parcels, the chief explained that “the problems are far from over.” “These parcels will enable us to stay afloat for now”, said Chief Moera-Awalie who added that a structural solution is necessary and that she hopes that “the cause of the mass fish deaths will be determined soon so that appropriate measures can be taken”.
